Bacopa monnieri, otherwise known as waterhyssop or brahmi, among other names, is a creeping herb that is usually found growing near or in wetlands around the world. It has been a staple in traditional ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and has been used to treat a variety of ailments. Its potential health benefits are likely a result of the wide variety of chemical constituents found in the plant, including dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins known as bacosides. Bacosides comprise a family of 12 known analogs. Other saponins called bacopasides I–XII were identified in Bacopa Monnieri extracts. The alkaloids brahmine, nicotine, and herpestine have been catalogued, along with D-mannitol, apigenin, hersaponin, monnierasides I–III, cucurbitacin and plantainoside B.
